I’ve always wanted to be an activist ….
This tour will visit Maules Creek where Whitehaven Coal has a open cut coal mine in the Leard Sate Forest , where we will hear from the neighboring farmers about the effects of the mine on their health, livelihoods and environment . The Leard is also the birthplace of Front Line Action On Coal which staged the first blockade of a coal mine in Australia. The blockade lasted 3.5 years. From there we will go to the Pilliga State Forest which is the largest forest in NSW (3000km2). It is here that environmental vandals Santos are planning to put 800+ Coal Seam Gas wells. This ancient forest is home to 42 threatened species and is the southern recharge zone for the Great Artesian Basin. We’ll be staying at the Pilliga Pottery, a major tourist attraction and a hub for community activism as well as going on walks through this magical forest.
